OPEN LETTER TO LEON
November 15th, 2024
I (Gigi) watched the #4/#1 “case study” video through Communication4All in the morning. I did not tell Geo how I felt other than to say the below when he came home from school:
Geo watched from beginning to 2:08

He expressed that he wanted me to post the transcript in full for context. Here it is:

Gigi: Hey, I want to you show you this video I came across this morning that caused me to have a lot of feelings and I’m wondering what you think.
What are your initial thoughts?
IM SO ANGRY
Can you expound on that?
SOMEONE NEEDS TO NAME NONSPEAKERS IN A LAWSUIT OVER THIS
What is the one thing in the short clip you saw that upset you the most?
IT WAS THE STARTLING WAY SHE MADE HIM SPIN OUT AND GET DISREGULATED AND MADE HIM WORK FOR A REWARD LIKE HES AN ANIMAL
TOO MANY ANGLES TO ENTER INTO A REASONABLE DISCUSSION
LISTENING TO HER PROMPTING
MAPPING PATHS THAT LEAD ONLY TO ANXIETY MAKES MY LIFE NOT FEEL IMPORTANT
Any ideas on action items?
LIKE TO WRITE A MESSAGE TO LEON
When? We can do it tomorrow, it’s getting a bit late.
MOM LETS RALLY TONIGHT FOR LEON
I’ll get the snacks.
message for Leon:
DEAR LEON
MY NAME IS GEO
IM AN UNRELIABLE SPEAKER AND HIGH MOTOR IMPAIRMENT HAPPENS TO AFFECT ALL I DO
HOW TO SPELL WITH REGULATION CAN TAKE YEARS
MY OWN EXPERIENCES LEAD ME ON STAMPING OUT ALL BAD PRACTICE
RALLY
HAVING A GOOD PRACTITIONER IN THE EARLY STAGES IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF YOUR LIFE AS A PERSON READY TO REACH FOR COMMUNICATION WITH HEART ON THE LINE
ONE HAS TO BE AWARE THAT ALL METHODS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL IN HOW THE PEOPLE IN THEM TREAT NONSPEAKERS
NONOS INCLUDE PEOPLE PROMPTING IN A WAY THAT OVERWHELMS THE MOTOR INSTEAD OF SUPPORTING IN A COOPERATIVE MANNER
IT ROMANTICIZES DANGEROUS HABITS
-GEO

Geo asked to post this today.

Thank you Geo for your perspective from a non-speaker's point of view. The video was hard to watch. I've worked with kids for over 30 years and have been working with them doing S2C for the last 2 years. I'm not going to disparage another practitioner but I'll say people learn better from a teacher with a kind, calm demeanor, and one who does not call the student names, even if it's done jokingly. And, there are certainly better strategies for keeping a person seated.
Well said, Geo. Watching the session video was unsettling. I didn’t like seeing Leo pushed back into his chair repeatedly either.
